What’s New in PPG Bible 5:

From first sight to first flight and way, WAY beyond! The world’s most complete guide to Powered Paragliding just got much better. This is our most important update so far, with large parts re-written, improved, and with better illustrations added. New or revised content reflects current technology and training methods. It is the first time that page counts have been redistributed, putting content where it’s needed more. Clarity and focus were a major goal so, by using easy-to-understand 3D illustrations we were able to clarify airspace while reducing its page count. Those additional four pages were put to good use. Repetitive information, still present for convenience, has been reduced to make room for more, better and bigger illustrations along with relevant text.

  • Chapter 1: Much of Chapter 1 describes the process you’ll encounter along the way toward becoming a competent paramotor pilot along with minimums that you should look for.

The PPG Bible does not address cost because it is such a moving target. However, this article gives you a realistic look at what you’ll spend while providing a downloadable spreadsheet to plug in your own numbers.

The most important thing you can do for yourself is to get good instruction. Anyone can declare themselves an instructor so make sure they are at least certified by USPPA/USUA or USHPA. Even better is that they come recommended by a responsible, trusted pilot. There are a few great instructors that aren’t yet certified but it is up to you to research them more thoroughly. Instructing carries significant risk to the student and we’ve learned a lot about how to minimize that risk.

There are benefits in going to a local part-timer and different benefits from traveling to a full-time school or paying someone to come to your locale. Regardless of your path, ask to use a nationally recognized syllabus (USPPA/USUA or USHPA with additional power material). The USPPA/USUA has one where the student and instructor both initial each area so nothing gets missed.

  • Chapter 2: The gear is simple but the choices are daunting. We’ve done reviews to give you some minimal guidance but, for your first foray into the sport, it’s far, far better to go with what your chosen instructor is familiar with. Having said that, it’s good to be informed that is our mission.

This chapter is a quick overview for the new student just getting started. More details appear in Section V.

As new information comes out and gear changes, some of those improvements will be added here. For example, one area of constant evolution is communication. A section in equipment reviews has been added to explore the many options and, where possible, to review them in actual flight tests.

Instrumentation is another area that has enjoyed innovation. Although we pride ourselves on simplicity, sometimes a bit of information can prevent costly mistakes such as how a cylinder head temperature guage can warn of impending engine melt down.

Entire chapters of the Powered Paragliding Bible are devoted to what trade-offs come in wings, motors and various accessories but sometimes we can present more details and more timely details here on FootFlyer. The discussion of radios is a good example.

  • Chapter 3: The greatest indicator of success in paramotoring is how well you can handle the paraglider. There is a wealth of skill that’s fun to acquire on its own right, let alone how much it will improve your launch success.Kiting the wing, the process of keeping it overhead and under control has some surprising fine points. From holding it airborne but just above the ground to touching a wingtip and bringing it back to level, you’ll learn techniques and ways to practice them in a realistic environment. This chapter and additional information is meant for you to be wearing only a kiting harness. Among the skills covered are inflating the wing in various wind conditions, turning around when appropriate, handling stronger winds and ways to depower the wing. Also included are various ways to kite without a harness.More advanced kiting information will be included here on FootFlyer. Skills that are particular to using with a motor are covered in Chapter 4 which puts wing handling together with motoring.
  • Chapter 4:  “Preparing for your first flight.” You’ve learned how to handle the wing without power, now its time to add the motor. Most of these items involve everything that build up to that first flight. They are rehearsed in a simulator, preferably one that allows pulling each riser separately.
  • Chapter 5: Time to fly. That first flight will certainly be memorable one. But for the properly prepared student it will be a good memory. Otherwise it could be a disaster.

There are several important things that a new pilot should know both in his and by automatic reaction. Aviators who teach others to become aviators long ago realized the importance of rehearsal so the necessary reactions to a few possible diversions from the norm happen with little thought. A good instructor will make sure his charges are so equipped.

  • Chapter 6: “Flying with wheels.” “Eventually, we’ll all be on wheels.” That may be true but I’ve seen some 70+ year old foot launchers making it look easy. One prolific Instructor, Don Jordan continues to fly and teach foot launch at 71 years old (as of 2007).

Many pilots choose to roll instead of run for its own sake. It’s fun. There are distinct advantages, too. For flying at high elevations or doing tandem instruction it’s dramatically easier than foot launching, allows pilots to carry more, is easier on the legs and back (with proper suspension/protection) and is less dependent on perfect winds.

Most powered paragliders can be quickly mounted/dismounted to a wheeled cart, giving the pilot a choice.

A powered paraglider trike (or quad) is, by definition, a foot launchable unit with wheels added. What separates wheeled powered paragliders from powered parachutes is the wing. Paragliders are efficient which is why we can use small enough motors to foot launch—but they require more pilot expertise. Powered parachutes are easier to learn but require gobs more power to plow their inefficient square canopies skyward. Elliptical powered parachutes wings close the gap with heavier PPG trikes. One trike, developed by Chad Bastian, has foot steering hookups intended to be connected in flight. That’s how powered parachutes are almost always flown—with your feet.

There are MANY other revisions and quite a few corrections. The entire book was gone through this time thanks to the enormous help of Tim Kaiser who has made it much better. He not only helped improve the content but prevented many errors. There will still be some, there always are, but there should be fewer of them.
Million Dollar Press: Every edition, including this one, is printed on a million dollar 6-color press and laminated so we decided to make the six Section covers full color pictures. They’re beautiful. They were previously done with grey scales. It makes it that much more enjoyable to look through.
Physically: The cover is very slightly thinner and glossier with a better laminate. Coated paper, as with previous editions, was used for a nice look. It is still a “perfect bound” build.

PPG Bible Product Description:

Powered Paragliding Bible 5 USPPA Jeff Goin Buy OnlineSections are devoted to pilots in various stages of their flying from raw beginner to competition expert including how to buy and setup your paramotor and, more importantly, how to minimize the risk in your flying. Invaluable information is laid out in an easy-reading format. This is the main book carried by most respected English speaking schools throughout the world. Besides flying, learn what you need to fly and thrive in congested airspace using 3D illustrations and practical explanations geared specifically to paramotor pilots. Divided into sections, it guides the complete beginner from understanding the gear, through solo, flying on their own, and then mastering the sport.

The most complete reference manual on Powered Paragliding just got better again! Lots better. Color has been improved, new diagrams added, existing diagrams improved, and new photo techniques clearly show progressive tasks, including launch and landing with animation extracts. There’s brand new material including more on reflex wings. New paramotor techniques and accumulated wisdom since edition 2 came out have been incorporated. Thanks to the many who have contributed suggestions and editing.

The fifth edition was our most ambitious undertaking since the book was written. Hundreds of hours were spent on editing, 3D animations, diagrams, and layout. This was our largest print run to date which helped keep the price down in spite of higher printing costs. Some material is best presented in a plain, easy-to-read book. It provides quick access to the exact subject matter with in-depth material that is digestible at your own pace. The PPG Bible is just such a book for the sport of paramotoring. It is a fun, informative, easy-to-understand and, most of all, thorough treatment on the subject of powered paragliding.

You’ll find a concise presentation of material for anyone serious about flying. It will be appreciated by those just learning to fly as well as those wanting to master the sport, to explore all it has to offer. There is complete, but understandable coverage of airspace and regulations as they apply to paramotor pilots. Edition Five has improved these diagrams even more and new text improves clarity on this sometimes difficult (and otherwise boring) subject.
